When you receive an interview call, you naturally start thinking about putting your best foot forward on that important day. But in order to make this possible, you need to prepare really well, as preparation here is the key to success. Following is a discussion on the interview process and preparation.

Planning in advance

Think of your answers to the commonly asked interview questions – a list of which you can easily find on the internet. Prepare brief, to-the-point responses for the questions that are usually asked in the beginning of the interview (Example). It is always a good idea to write down your answers. You can also ask a friend to conduct a mock interview with you. Have this mock interview recorded, and then play it back in order to evaluate your performance. Also, ask for your friend’s feedback regarding your performance. Aside from the frequently asked questions, you need to think about how you will tackle the more tricky questions – e.g. the question about your weaknesses. Try to find out about the format of the interview and the number of interviewers. Knowing about these things beforehand will help you feel relaxed. You should also research the company and gather all the relevant information about it.

Before the interview
Dressing well on the interview day will give a boost to your confidence. So, be careful about what you wear for the interview. In order to ensure that you show up for the interview on time, think in advance about the company’s location and the transport option that you would be using. All the required documents and a few copies of your CV should be placed neatly in a folder. Have a look at these documents before the interview starts.

 During the interview

There are a number of things you need to be careful about during the interview. Firstly, don’t be afraid to pause and think when you are asked a question. It is alright to think for a few moments before you come up with an answer. When an interviewee speaks too quickly during the interview, it appears as a sign of nervousness. Hence, slow down a bit if you catch yourself speaking too fast. But your speed shouldn’t either be too slow, as this indicates a lack of attention. Speak clearly and confidently. Try to maintain eye contact as you speak.

After the interview

After the interview, try to find a quiet place to sit, and write down the questions that you were asked during the interview. Try to remember as many of them as you possibly can. Now rank each of these questions on a scale of one to ten based upon how you answered them. This activity will basically benefit you during future interviews. Think of better responses for the questions that you couldn’t handle very well, and to which you’ve given a low ranking. Whether you are able to secure the job or not, look at it as a good opportunity that would help you perform better in interviews in the future. If you are successful, start preparing for the next step in the selection process.
