some group of Nigerian students finds a vaccine for lasser fever

The menace of Lassa fever which have posed great threat to African countries especially Nigeria, Benin, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Togo, prompted an urgent research within countries involved. Students, lecturers and Lab Scientist within Universities and Other Medical institution are keen in proffering lasting solution to this pathetic epidemic.

We should remember statistically that “Since November 2015, Nigeria, Benin, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Togo have reported more than 300 cases of Lassa fever and 167 deaths. Nigeria accounts for the majority of the cases with 266 cases and 138 deaths reported in 22 of the country’s 36 states as at 21 March 2016. Benin has recorded 51 cases and 25 deaths. Togo and Sierra Leone each reported 2 cases. More recently, since February, Liberia has reported seven confirmed cases including 3 deaths” as reported by WHO, April 2016.

About 15-20% of hospitalized Lassa fever patients will die from the illness. The overall mortality rate is estimated to be 1%, but during epidemics, mortality can climb as high as 50%. The mortality rate is greater than 80% when it occurs in pregnant women during their third trimester; fetal death also occurs in nearly all those cases. Abortion decreases the risk of death to the mother. Some survivors experience lasting effects of the disease.

However, certain selected students in the School of Health of the institution of Learning, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, took to their research which have proven to be a lasting solution to one of the greatest epidemic known to Africa. These students who drew insight so much in the theory of Christian Happi, (a Professor of Molecular Biology and Genomics and Director, African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), Redeemer’s University, Ede) which centers on “Rapid Diagnostic Test Kit for Lassa Fever”. These students with lab scientist, and other specialized participant after several research and critical analysis of Lassa fever survivors discovered antibodies that effectively kills Lassa virus. This led to the production of a prototype drug in the laboratory from their technology which develop rapid diagnostics test against pathogens like the virus that cause Lassa fever and other diseases. Blood samples were collected from suspected Lassa patients and validated with the Lassa fever diagnostic test kit. A patient is being tested and closely monitored for months showing zero symptoms of Lassa fever.

This invention has been spectacular as the Team has filed to W.H.O for approval to countries beyond Nigeria proposing for a Vaccine name “Lassamarphine Diamin” specifically Lassa treatment all over the world. As the drug, ribavirin that is currently being used for Lassa fever treatment was not initially designed for the condition. That is why it is only effective when used in the early phase of the disease. But most of the time, cases are referred or diagnosed when it is often too late.
