A three-storey building collapsed in Nibo Street in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, weekend, leaving residents of the area threatened.

No life was reportedly lost as the building was yet under construction for three years, though it was nearing completion.

When The AUTHORITY on Saturday visited the site in the company of Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), the chairman of the agency, Elder Fred Udeogu explained that the suspicion was that the building had structural defects, more so that it might have been constructed without authorisation by the appropriate authorities.

He explained that such huge loss and risk of the lives of people could have been avoided if the owner of the building followed the due process that would ensure that the responsible agencies supervised, and approved the various stages of the construction.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Chief Moses Nome who also visited the site said that the building’s owner and site engineer who have not been traced would be arrested and prosecuted whenever seen.

“They violated the state’s building-construction provisions, as we directed that those who want to erect buildings should contact relevant government officials with their building plans,” he said.

He noted that the measure was for government to make necessary recommendations as the building collapsed due to poor quality of work and materials used in erecting a building of such magnitude.

“We discovered that 8 and 12 millimetre (mm) rods were used to construct it instead of 16 and 20mm and the space between the rods used for the ‘decking’ is about 8 inches instead of 6 inches.

A resident of the area, Mrs Dorothy Oko, noted that the building has been under construction for about three years, and urged the government to pull it down and evacuate the debris.

“It should do so without waiting to arrest the owner in order to save the inhabitants of inherent dangers caused by the collapse,” she said.
